New school sensory garden/play area completed

St. Conaire’s new school sensory garden/play area has just been completed.  The final planting of a laurel hedge took place today, December 12th, 2014.  Planning for this project began over 3 years ago when the Green School Committee under the guidance of Mr. O’Brien consulted the entire school population on their vision for this area.  All ideas were taken on board and incorporated into the final design.  Funding was obtained through the generosity of many friends and our Parents’ Association.  Work was delayed by the construction of our new classroom block.

Contractor Dermot Custy moved on to the site in May and began ground works.  Play ground equipment was installed and planting then began in the autumn.  Hundreds of bulbs were planted and we hope they will bloom in the spring.  Teachers and pupils are involved in the planting and maintenance.  All plants and vegetables that have been included in the garden have a sensory aspect to them. Local garden expert Des Reynolds provided key guidance in the work done in the garden.  Thanks also to our caretaker John who has worked on the project.

There is a special area for classes who wish to undertake lessons outdoors at any time of the year.  This unique facility in St. Conaire’s has already brought much happiness and many opportunities to our pupils and we look forward to learning in and about it over the coming years.  Click here to see photographs about the garden’s creation.
